Education Secretary Linda McMahon issued a stark warning to U.S. universities Wednesday, signaling that institutions could lose federal research funding if they don’t align with Trump administration priorities.
Speaking to CNBC, McMahon said, “Universities should continue to be able to do research as long as they’re abiding by the laws and are in sync, I think, with the administration and what the administration is trying to accomplish.”

Her comments follow reports that the Trump administration plans to strip Harvard of $100 million in federal contracts and revoke its tax-exempt status. The Department of Homeland Security has accused Harvard of failing to address antisemitism and claimed that it collaborated with the Chinese Communist Party.
After Trump moved to block Harvard from enrolling foreign students, the university sued, calling the action “unlawful and unwarranted.” A judge has temporarily halted the policy. “Harvard’s answer was a lawsuit,” McMahon said.
